Combining isometrics with isotonic exercise = isometronics! Isometronics involve the use of heavy weights and a power rack. You set up your barbell between two sets of pins of a power rack. You then focus on a certain part of the range of motion for an exercise and do a partial rep, then press as hard as possible against the top pins for an isometric contraction. Isometronics was used extensively by Bob Hoffman and the York Barbell Company in the 1960s to train Olympic weightlifters, with much great success. Unfortunately, it was later discovered, that performance-enhancing drugs were also being used by many of these athletes at this time and some people mistakenly threw "the baby out with the bathwater."
